Since the Palaeolithic era, Estepona was having settlements in its regions. Since then, Phoenicians, Carthaginian, Romans, Moslems and Christians passed by this lands and left traces of their culture and traditions. Here below, we list some of the monuments you may like to visit during your stay in Estepona.

We will start our cultural excursion in the roman ruins of guadalmansa. They are archeological remains left by the romans. You must definately visit the Almenara tower there. There is also a center for interpretaion of these remains where you can enjoy the information offered about the excavations and remains found here. There are also remains of Castillejos, found in the area that date back to the prehistoric era, that were reconstructed by the muslims.
We must also mention the Nicio Castle, ruins of a fortress that dates back to the IX century. This castle was of great importance during the Omar Ben Hafsun era and of his rebellion against the Cordobes emirates, although he succumbed to these in teh 10th century. From the muslim era you should also visit the Clock Tower of Estepona, even if it was remodeled as a neoclassic chapel in the 18th century.

Our monument tour around Estepona continues to the Castle of San Luis, which was built by the Catholic King and Queens'orders in teh 16th century, to revitalize the villa and defend it against invadors. Another element of defense were the Almenara Towers, built along the coastline to defend the possible muslim, north-african and turk invasions. Torre Almenara and Arroyo Vaquero were built in the 16th century but were restored in 1987. They measure 11 meters in height. The Almenara Tower of Saladavieja or Celada Vieja was built in 1575 in what today is the Urbanization Punta Doncella. This tower measures 10 1/2 meters in height. The Almenara del Padron tower is located in front of the Hotel Kempinsky, and measures 12 meters high. This one was also built in 1575 and was restored in the 1998. Another Almenara Tower built in 1575 is that of Velerin, which is still pending restoration. One of the most important towers is not to far away. It is the Almenara de Guadalmansa Tower located in the urbanization fo Cabo Bermejo. This tower is from the muslic era and was modified in the 16th century. Other towers in Estepona are those of Saladillo and Casasola.

Other important monuments to visit in Estepona are the Church of Los Remedios and the Bullring which was built in 1972.
